String Hoppers is a local specialty snack in Sri Lanka. It is very popular in the north and east of Sri Lanka. The Sinhalese name is called idiyappam. The name idiyappam comes from Tamil. The Tamil words idi (meaning beat) and appam (meaning pancake) together form the new name of the Appam dish. This dish is also often called noolappam or noolputtu, derived from the Tamil and Malayalam word nool, which means rope or thread. It is often eaten with dishes such as chicken curry or fish curry and coconut milk.
